The end of August means getting the kids ready to return to school. In the parking lot of Richie Station Market Place in Capital Heights, Maryland; anticipation and excitement filled the air as families, students, and educators came together for the 2nd annual Back-to-School Kickoff Event. This much-anticipated event symbolized more than just the end of summer vacation; it represented a collective commitment to education and community engagement.

Local vendors lined the pathways, offering an array of delicious treats and school supplies. Volunteers from community organizations such as Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc and The Order of the Eastern Star had backpack giveaways. The backpack giveaways were a generous initiative, providing children with essential tools for the school year. Volunteers distributed various backpacks, from the must-have clear bags to bags with the kid’s favorite characters on them filled with notebooks, pencils, and supplies, ensuring every student left with the resources they needed to succeed, fostering a sense of readiness and excitement for learning.

This event also provided fun and entertainment for the children. The event organizers went all out to ensure children had a blast while gearing up for the upcoming school year. Various engaging and exciting activities were designed to captivate their imaginations and create lasting memories, such as face painting, Bouncy House, Games, and Contests provided by Dave and Busters and the Prince Georges County Fire Department.

The Go-Go band’s performance at the center stage was a dynamic and rhythmic delight. Their energetic beats and lively melodies had attendees of all ages dancing and grooving to the music. The band’s charismatic frontperson engaged the crowd, creating an electric atmosphere that united the community in a shared celebration of music and unity.

Crystal Peace, a renowned realtor, and chairman of the Order of the Eastern Star Fraternity Inc. community service committee, expressed the importance of giving back to the Prince George’s County community.
“Giving back to the community is essential as it fosters a sense of social responsibility, strengthens bonds within the community, and helps address various social issues. It promotes positive change, improves the quality of life for others, and can lead to a more supportive and harmonious society overall.”
